October 23, 2024 - Northern Kentucky University’s Associate Dean of the College of Health and Human Services, Dr. Vanessa Hunn, has been selected for the Fulbright Specialist Program. Dr. Hunn will have the distinguished opportunity to provide expertise to a Fulbright host university abroad while serving a three-year term on the program’s roster.
As a Fulbright Specialist, Dr. Hunn may be matched to projects with host institutions in more than 150 countries. Following assignment to a host university, Dr. Hunn plans to share her expertise and learn from other international institutions in areas including culturally competent research and instrument development; inclusive teaching pedagogy; and faculty success through culturally competent evaluation and policy development.
Dr. Hunn previously participated in a short-term, international initiative at Helwan University in Cairo, Egypt. During the program, Dr. Hunn and 19 other American university professors engaged with local students, faculty and administrators in discussions on higher education, society, child welfare, law and culture.
“My experience in Egypt significantly enhanced my commitment to understanding and engaging with international cultures, expanding my knowledge of higher education systems worldwide, fostering collaboration on a global scale and promoting international partnerships,” says Dr. Vanessa Hunn. “Through the Fulbright Specialist Program, I hope to continue my work in these critical areas and expand my expertise even further.
Dr. Vanessa Hunn is a first-generation college student, and the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky’s College of Social Work. With more than 20 years of experience in social work, Dr. Hunn remains a committed advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion among students, faculty and staff at higher education institutions.
The Fulbright Specialist Program was established in 2001 by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The program pairs highly qualified U.S. academics and professionals with host institutions abroad to share their expertise on an international level while strengthening institutional connections and cross-cultural collaborations.
