Internships

Internships offer students an opportunity to learn and expand their practical experience. It can provide students with a basis for linking their course work to their future careers as public service professionals. Students will work under the supervision of a public or not-for-profit agency official. Internships may be substituted as an elective for their concentration with prior approval from the MPA director.

Requirements and Forms

Time commitment: For three hours credit, the student should expect to work approximately 10-15 hours per week (180 hours total) either directly in the internship placement, or in attending meetings, workshops, conferences, etc., related to the placement.
Internship responsibilities: After the student has had an opportunity to visit the designated agency and to consult with the field supervisor, the latter will be asked to complete a Memorandum of Understanding (pdf) of the intern's responsibilities for the semester.
Daily journal: The student is expected to maintain a daily journal, briefly indicating duties performed and/or commenting on them.
Agency Evaluation: Near the end of the semester the student will be evaluated by the agency supervisor. The supervisory evaluation form (pdf) should be mailed to the intern coordinator no later than the week preceding final examinations. The evaluation form will serve as a key factor in the final evaluation of the student's performance.
Student Evaluation: The student is expected to fully answer the questions on the student evaluation form (pdf) and complete the student evaluation of internship placement form (pdf).
Submit Portfolio - The internship portfolio should contain an excel sheet with documented days/hours worked, the signed Memorandum of Agreement, daily journal, student evaluation of internship placement form and answers to the questions found on the student evaluation form. This portfolio needs to be submitted by the Friday BEFORE exam week.

Study Abroad

Dr. Julie Olberding will be teaching Arts Administration (PAD 594) as a two-week study-abroad in Ireland, tentatively scheduled for June 8-24,2024 with online work in the weeks before and after the trip. The class will explore theories and practical skills needed to manage arts and cultural organizations in the United States and Ireland. PAD 594 can count toward a required course in the Arts Administration micro-credential and/or as an elective in the Nonprofit Management certificate and/or MPA degree.

As part of the study-abroad experience, students will visit various types of arts and cultural organizations, ranging from larger, well-established, national entities such as the National Irish Museum and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media in Dublin to smaller, newer, community-based organizations such as the Limerick Arts Office, Galway Dance Project, and Blue Teapot Theater Company.
